Lacunae and crypts in iridology

7 min readIridology

Lacunae and crypts are two of the most-cited iris markings in classical iridology. Lacunae are small openings in the iris fibre layer that look like leaf-shaped or lens-shaped gaps. Crypts are deeper openings, often with a more dramatic appearance and a darker base. In the classical reading, both are interpreted as constitutional weakness signs at the body zones where they appear on the iris chart.

In one line

Lacunae (small iris openings) and crypts (deeper openings) read in iridology as classical constitutional weaknesses at the corresponding body zones.

Wellness tradition, not medical advice

Iridology is a wellness tradition documented since 1881. It is not a peer-reviewed medical practice, and controlled studies have not validated its diagnostic claims. The readings on this site are framed as cultural reflection. For any specific medical concern, see a qualified medical professional.

What lacunae look like and where they form

Lacunae appear as small, leaf-shaped or lens-shaped openings in the visible iris-fibre layer. The classical iridology view is that they represent areas where the iris stroma is less densely woven, exposing the deeper layers underneath. To the naked eye, lacunae appear as small dark gaps in the otherwise-fibrous iris texture.

Lacunae can form anywhere in the iris and are read by their location on the iris chart. A lacuna in the lower-iris zone (mapped to the digestive system) is read as constitutional weakness or specific attention needed in that area. A lacuna in the upper-iris zone (mapped to the head and nervous system) is read as constitutional weakness or attention needed in that area.

Lacunae are mostly stable across adult life. They are formed during early development and are read as inherited constitutional features rather than acquired markings. The classical reading is that lacunae point to inherited tendencies; they do not predict that the corresponding condition will develop, only that the constitutional pattern is present.

What crypts look like and how they differ from lacunae

Crypts are deeper iris openings, often appearing as small dark pits in the iris surface. They are typically more pronounced than lacunae and are read as more-significant constitutional features. The classical reading is that crypts represent more-pronounced underlying patterns than lacunae.

Crypts are also mostly stable across adult life but can deepen with age in the classical reading. New crypts forming in adulthood are read as a sign that the corresponding constitutional pattern has activated. The classical practice is to note any crypts at the first reading as baseline and to compare future readings against that baseline for changes.

The distinction between lacunae and crypts is not always sharp; many iridologists describe a spectrum from small lacunae to large crypts. The reading depends on the iridologist's interpretation, which is part of why the practice does not produce consistent results across different practitioners (a finding documented in the controlled studies of iridology accuracy).

Honest framing on iris markings

Ophthalmology has thoroughly studied iris structure. Lacunae and crypts are real anatomical features of the iris; their existence is not disputed. What is disputed is the claim that their location corresponds to specific body-system constitutional patterns. The 1979 JAMA study by Simon, Worthen, and Mitas specifically tested whether iridologists could identify the presence of kidney disease from iris markings; they could not, performing no better than chance.

The honest framing is that lacunae and crypts are observable iris features with a tradition-based interpretation system that has not been validated by controlled studies. They function as a vocabulary for talking about iris appearance and constitutional wellness, not as a diagnostic tool.

The Iridology reading on this site identifies visible lacunae and crypts in the uploaded eye photograph and presents the classical interpretation alongside the explicit limits of that interpretation. The output is editorial wellness reflection, not medical assessment.
